In IPv6, a privacy address (also known as a temporary address) is used to enhance the privacy of users by generating random, short-lived IP addresses for outgoing connections. This helps protect users from tracking based on their IP addresses. Privacy addresses are generated using Stateless Address Autoconfiguration (SLAAC) but with a randomized interface identifier rather than the traditional one derived from the device’s MAC address.

Windows: IPv6 privacy extensions are enabled by default. To check or modify the settings:

    • Open a command prompt with administrator privileges. Use the command
    <i style="background-color: var(--bb-content-background-color); font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(--bb-body-text-color);">netsh interface ipv6 show privacy
    • Enable or disable privacy addresses using:
    <i style="background-color: var(--bb-content-background-color); font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(--bb-body-text-color);">netsh interface ipv6 set privacy state=enable
    <i style="background-color: var(--bb-content-background-color); font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(--bb-body-text-color);">netsh interface ipv6 set privacy state=disable

    • Temporary IPv6 Address: Windows generates these addresses to prevent your device from being uniquely identifiable across sessions. Instead of using a single IPv6 address assigned to your device’s network interface, Windows generates temporary ones that change over time.
    • Use in Web Browsing: When accessing websites, these temporary addresses are used instead of your regular IP address to avoid tracking.

Are the Privacy Addresses also persistent on MAC OS?

In macOS, IPv6 privacy addresses are split into two categories with different persistence behaviors: <b data-path-to-node=”0″ data-index-in-node=”101″>Temporary Addresses are strictly non-persistent and rotate approximately every 24 hours to prevent long-term web tracking, while <b data-path-to-node=”0″ data-index-in-node=”230″>Stable Privacy Addresses (labeled as “secured”) are persistent as long as you remain connected to the same network. This dual-layer approach ensures that while your outgoing web traffic uses a constantly changing identity, your device maintains a consistent “stable” address for local network services without ever revealing your hardware’s actual MAC address. Consequently, the address you use to browse the internet will change daily, but the address used for local identification will only change when you move to a different Wi-Fi SSID.

I am having the same issues. Could it be an access restriction due to location?

⚠️ Content Access Issue: Private Video in Windows Configuration Module

To the AFRINIC Academy Support Team,

I am reporting a technical issue within the current module regarding “Enabling Privacy Addresses on Windows.”

The instructional video intended to demonstrate this configuration is currently set to “Private” on YouTube, making the content inaccessible. As I am working through the practical labs for IPv6 host configuration, this creates a significant gap in the learning materials.

Could the team please check the video permissions or provide an alternative resource so we can complete the Windows configuration steps?

    Hello,

Could anyone share if they have the same problem with the videos in this module? All the video links for the key configurations (mainly linked to YouTube) are not working at all.
